After living nine months in a constantly growing and changing body, most new moms itch to get their old body back after baby arrives. This usually includes saying “good-bye” to at least a few pounds of baby weight in order to feel like themselves again. However, the reality is that new moms can struggle to get back into a regular exercise routine. With the busyness a new baby brings, scheduling in another activity is tough! Moms returning to work face the additional challenge of balancing spending time with baby and taking time for themselves during the few hours they have at home.
While it may not look exactly like it did before baby, exercise can still have a place in a new mom’s life. Here are a few tips to make it possible:
Be creative with workout space! Good exercise does not have to be done in a gym. Moms can get a great workout by using space inside the house or by running or walking outdoors. A park can become an ultimate gym, with picnic tables, benches, and hills to add challenge and variety!
Bring baby along! For a mom who’s working all day, the thought of leaving baby to go exercise can seem like too much to ask. But babies love to be included in walks or runs in the stroller. Exercise can also be a form of entertainment, so let baby watch as you go through a fitness DVD or circuit in the basement. Add in even more fun by sprinkling tickles and kisses throughout the workout!
Any time is the right time! Most new moms don’t have space in their schedules for 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week. But taking ten minutes here or there to get in a walk or do a set of pushups can be just as effective. The most important thing is to stay consistent and get some activity in every day!
