5 Things We're Thankful For at OTM

November 26, 2015

Thanksgiving is a great time for reflection and intentional gratitude for the bounty and beauty around us. At Over the Moon we are so humbled and grateful for many, many things in this work and in the Grand Rapids and Lakeshore communities. Here are our top five things we're thankful for this Thanksgiving:

#5 Increasing options for women in West Michigan: an accredited birthing center, a birthing suite, two new CNMs with hospital privelages at Spectrum Butterworth as well as a well-rounded field of experienced and competant homebirth midwives. Grand Rapids-area women have plenty of good options to choose from when it comes to where to birth their babies and with whom.

#4 Providers practicing evidence-based care.  We are so grateful for the work we've done that has allowed us to find those OBs, midwives and family physicians that are practicing evidenced-based care as opposed to policy-based care. We've been humbled to witness truly compassionate and mother-centered care. At times these practitioners provide evidence-based care at a detriment to their acceptance among their colleagues, but fortunately they hold the women they serve in higher regard.

#3 Supportive partners. It can be a challenge for partners to find their role in the childbirth process; especially when pressures from outside sources can be loud, albeit irrational or illogical (i.e. Men should be strong all the time, the partner should be the only support she needs, the partner should know how to guide and encourage a laboring woman even though he has no familiarity with the birthing process....WHAT?!?!) Whether it takes some convincing, or the partner took a "whatever she wants" stance from the beginning, we recognize the value of the partner's support, and putting himself second over the pregnant or birthing mother's needs and wants. We are so grateful to watch these partners become parents, to watch them gaze at loved one in awe and with love, and work with them as teammates in protecting the memory of giving birth.

#2 Amazing community resources: chiropractors, yoga, mental health, therapists, breastfeeding consultants and counselors, and birth photographers. The community in Grand Rapids supports mothers and new families. With family-centered resources like MomsBloom, Nurse Family Partnership, and PineRest's Mother and Baby Program, mothers in the Grand Rapids area have trustworthy and compassionate help when they need it most.

#1 Our clients! Our clients not only allow us to help support our families financially, but infuse us with personal growth and awe every day. We are so grateful to watch women become mothers, whether it be for the first time, or the fifth. We are grateful to facilitate personal growth in others, as our clients increase their awareness and/or assertiveness through the time we are blessed to share.

Happy Thanksgiving!
