“Can’t I just lie here a little while longer?”
That’s what I hear quite frequently as I’m finishing up adjustment on a pregnant woman who has been denied the comforts of lying on her belly for the duration of her pregnancy. We drop away the middle of the table, add a layer of specially designed “pregnancy pillows” to help create the perfectly comfy baby nest and Mom gets to relax while she and her baby get their much-needed nervous system tune-up.
...And if you’re wondering:YES! Pregnant women can get specific, scientific, gentle chiropractic adjustments throughout their entire pregnancy.
In fact, regular chiropractic care throughout pregnancy has been shown to reduce aches and pains while a woman is growing, helps balance out the pelvis to create an optimal shape for easier delivery, and even reduce labor and delivery times by as much as 60%!
If you didn’t realize how important chiropractic care is for your health and wellness throughout life, then you’ll be blown away by the importance during such a precious time in your life as is pregnancy.
My husband (also a chiropractor) and I meet and care for women throughout all stages of pregnancy, from pre-natal planning stages, to the 2-week “overdues” who are begging for a special “please make me go into labor now” type of adjustment (which, just to set the record straight, doesn’t actually exist. The body is ready when it’s ready, we just try to facilitate the process and prepare the body for the best positioning possible). I am one of the few chiropractors in West Michigan who has taken extra training to get certified in a special technique to help the common sacral and pelvic malpositioning caused during pregnancy call the Webster’s technique. This technique was discovered by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), in 1978. He developed it as a specific pelvic adjustment for pregnant women to help balance pelvic muscles and ligaments and potentially improve birth outcome. This is a special analysis and chiropractic adjustment that can help alleviate intra-uterine constraint, which can have a profound effect on the positioning of the uterus and in turn the amount of “room” a baby has in the womb.
I find the anticipation build as I await the arrival of the new little bundles as they arrive for their very first check up and adjustment. I ease any nervousness of the new, slightly tired, but extremely excited parents by explaining every step of the process as well as gently pressing into the arm of mom and dad…”it's as if you’re testing the ripeness of a tomato” which describes the pressure used to gently move the delicate baby bones back into proper alignment.
Because what happens if left out of place?
Possible ear infections, colic, acid reflux, behavioral issues, to name a few…so don’t wait around to find out, get your children checked for spinal misalignment, so they can grow and thrive as they are intended to!
